How to test whether my server's bandwidth is dedicated 10M?
Published: 2009-03-31
Customers often report: You promised a 10M bandwidth guarantee, but when I log in to the server to download software, it is only around 300K. Even when using Xunlei to download software from a server in another data center, it is only around 2M bps. Why can't it reach 10M?
Answer:The 10M bandwidth promised by our company means that the maximum outbound egress of your server (cloud host)'s uplink bandwidth connected to the backbone Internet can reach 10Mbps. It refers to the maximum rate when several users access simultaneously, not that a single user's test can reach 10M bps. For example, we now have two servers, one in Guangdong Telecom data center and one in Beijing Telecom data center, both with 100M dedicated bandwidth. Can single-threaded download using IE reach 100M? Of course it is impossible; generally in this case the single-thread speed is only around 1M.
When you log in to the server to download software, what you use is downlink bandwidth. Our company does not limit the downlink bandwidth (for colocation/rental servers, the limit is the same as the uplink). Sometimes the content being downloaded crosses network routes, which may cause your download to be slower; you can use a download tool to download it. Using 360's speed test function tests the downlink bandwidth.
The correct test method is:Provide a file larger than 100M on your server, and contact about 10 netizens to ask them to download it simultaneously using Xunlei. Then install a DU traffic monitoring software on the server, then observe on the server whether the downlink traffic can reach around 10Mbps. You can also install flashget and enable 50 threads at the same time to simulate 50 users downloading, to test whether the speed can reach 10Mbps, provided that the bandwidth of the PC you use for downloading is large enough and the communication quality with the data center is good.
If there is any problem, please provide the server username and password, and our staff can provide assistance.
