[Original] Analysis of the Advantages and Disadvantages of Current Popular Virtual Host Restriction Methods
Published: 2006-04-06
The resources of virtual hosting (CPU, memory, bandwidth, etc.) are always limited. To ensure that hundreds of users on the virtual hosting can all access normally, it is necessary to
impose certain restrictions on each virtual host site, to prevent a few sites with relatively large traffic from occupying most of the service resources and causing the server speed
to be slow or unstable.
Current virtual hosting is mainly divided into three types of traffic restrictions:
1: Traffic limit
It means limiting the total monthly traffic of a website. After the monthly traffic is exceeded, the website is automatically closed and automatically reopened at the beginning of the next month. The solution is to upgrade the space
or increase the traffic! 10 GB of traffic roughly supports 50 people online or about 2,500 page views per day.
Advantages: The data can be quantified. Both the service provider and the user can understand the daily and monthly traffic conditions in detail. Combined with logs and visit statistics, it is possible to
analyze which file accesses caused the traffic increase.
Disadvantages: It is relatively complicated to implement. It requires retaining the user's access logs and automatically using a program to aggregate statistics every day. It is also necessary to design a program to automatically close
and open websites whose traffic exceeds the standard. Therefore, small and medium-sized virtual hosting service providers lacking technical strength cannot support this restriction method.
At present, the top 10 virtual hosting service providers nationwide: 新网, 万网, 中国频道, 商务中国, 新网互联, 通联无限, 你好万
维, 西部数码, etc. all adopt this traffic restriction method.
2: IIS limit
IIS limit is currently the most commonly used restriction method by small and medium-sized virtual hosting service providers, that is, limiting the number of simultaneous connections to a website. If too many people access at the same time,
the website will fail to open.
Advantages: Implementation is very simple; it can be set directly in the server's IIS. No program development is required.
Disadvantages: The data cannot be quantified. Neither the service provider nor the user can see the number of simultaneous connections to the website. If the user's website shows Service
Unavailable or other prompt, the service provider will say that the user has too many simultaneous connections, while the user will say that my website only has a few people online. In addition, IIS
limits sometimes cannot truly play the role of restricting websites that particularly consume resources. According to tests, a website with an IIS limit of 100 connections, providing rar files for users
to download, can have a total daily traffic of over 30G. And 30G of traffic is the total daily traffic of a normal virtual hosting server. That is, a
website costing a few hundred yuan can use up all the resources of the entire server; the IIS limit does not truly achieve the purpose of restriction. Some dishonest service providers promise users 200 IIS connections, but set it to 20 connections on the server, and the user is unaware!
The 6th-ranked virtual hosting service provider nationwide: 中资源 adopts this restriction method.
3: CPU limit
CPU limit is usually set to a 1% or 2% CPU limit; after exceeding the CPU resources, it will be automatically closed.
Advantages: Implementation is very simple; it can be set directly in the server's IIS. No program development is required.
Disadvantages: The data cannot be quantified. Neither the service provider nor the user can see the CPU usage currently occupied by the website. If the server is win2000, the CPU limit basi-
cally has no effect and cannot achieve the restriction effect. If it is win2003, because many sites share one process pool, if "exceeding CPU resources means
closing" is set, if one website in the pool uses too many resources, it will cause the pool to hang, affecting the normal operation of other websites in the same pool. And the recovery time
is relatively slow! CPU limits often cause websites to frequently fail to open, so relatively few service providers adopt this method.
In addition, there is a type of virtual hosting with no restrictions at all. The 8th-ranked virtual hosting service provider nationwide: 时代互联 claims that its virtual hosting
has unlimited traffic and IIS, but according to its users on 百度贴吧, once the user's traffic is relatively large, it will be closed and they will be required to upgrade, for the reason that: the website occupies too many server resources.
In summary, traffic restriction is currently the most reasonable restriction method and is adopted by 80% of large virtual hosting service providers. When the user's traffic is not large,
such as an enterprise website, no matter what restriction method the service provider adopts, the user generally will not experience a difference. When the user's traffic is relatively large,
the difference appears. Users had better tailor measures to their needs and choose a host type comparable to their own website's traffic; otherwise, the website operation effect will be
less than ideal.
